I’m keen to use mobile phones much much more in my Year 10 Humanities class, so I went in the other day and asked them for ideas. One kid piped up and said "What about some big class project where we all use our phones?" Awesome idea I thought! What exactly would we do? So, my question is what do you think we could do as an extended project – maybe covering a week or two of classes. Bluetoothing files, and sending stuff to the internet via email is great. We’ve got plenty of capability to do that, also, voice and video recording of course. our topic is going to be history of crime, death, punishment, human rights etc. I’m also going to have at least a week of class where we use nothing other than our phones, but I’m not as yet sure exactly what that will look like.

Ideas that I’d like to incorporate:
*sending files via bluetooth
*sending audio and video instructions
*get the kids to bluetooth or SMS quiz questions to each other
*uploading their work to our ning site by sending stuff to the special movile email address that ning creates for each user
*using QR codes around the school to move kids on to the next clue for the unit or something like that.

But as for a mass class project that they could all contribute to…

Well our class ning could be the central place for their work and the project could be broken in to sections and each student or group has to contribute their own section to a common product but only using their phones.

I also want them to do mobile diaries, so maybe using 12seconds.tv or something like that to show what they are learning bit by bit and what they think of the doing most of it by phone.

Anyway, that’s just a few thoughts going on in my head. See how it takes shape. Comments and further ideas more than welcome!

The other day i actually heard myself say to my students that now, because we have temporarily limited access to the lap top class sets, that they had to make sure they brought stuff to write with and on to class. Not that that in itself is a bad thing, but i actually had it in my head that pen and paper work would be the focus of our classes now. Tsk tsk. It will not be! It has its place, but why not shift focus to hand helds? Phones and iPods? Have been meaning to do that all year so now is the time to jump right on in. Initial ideas include: using mobile google maps for french revolutions history, using blue tooth messaging for debates in international politics, creating and bluetoothing video and audio replies to questions in my year 10 humanities class and maybe some mobile blogging for year 11 history. See what goes shall we? One thing to really look in to.. Getting kids to make relevant and significant connections to the outside world through their phones. Again, see what goes, shall we?

How very cool – Utterli now has a desktop client, which means that there is a little application you can download and use to send messages to Utterli (and consequently to whereever Utterli cross posts to) without having to go the webpage. Desktop Clients are great ways of keeping in touch with lots of different sites without having to open them all the time. I use Twhirl as a desktop client for Twitter and Seesmic. (Seesmic is a video conversation site).

The only thing with this Utterli desktop client and the Twhirl one where Seesmic is concerned is that is does not seem to support video and audio posting. So when usig the desktop client I can only send text Utters. If I want to send audio or video I have to go to the website (or use my phone – which is not working with Utterli while I”m here in China). That’s ok, can’t have everything I guess!

I’m in China with 20 students until mid October. I’ve been meaning to get to Utterli again for a while, but life never works out the way you plan it! Just here now to see if I can get my Chinese mobile to work with Utterli. Fingers crossed!
